Konkani Cinema Day

The first ever Konkani film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ was produced and released on 24th April 1950. ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ was written, produced and directed by A L Jerry Braganza who originally hailed from Mapusa, Bardez Goa and is known as the Father of Konkani Cinema.

It was the golden era of Indian Cinema during which the first Konkani film was released. The Father of Konkani Cinema late A. L. Jerry Braganza was well versed with the Indian film industry took this venture and thus on 24th April 1950 under the banner of Etica Productions the Konkani film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ which was based on the novel of Dioginho D’Melo ‘Mogachi Vhodd’ was released at Dasharata Cinema, Mapusa. Incidentally this happened to be the feast of Our Lady of Milagres at Mapusa. The cast included Leena Fernandes, Lewis M. Ratus, James Braganza, Irene Amaral, Jacob Fernandes, etc. Leena Fernandes who played the lead role is still alive and is living at Mumbai.

Hence every year Tiatr Academy of Goa celebrates 24th April as the Konkani Cinema Day.
