The condolence meet commenced with the TAG President Agostinho Temudo leading the gathering in paying floral tributes to the portraits of these two artistes followed by Member Secretary Jose Alexandre Rodrigues, Tony Cabral, brother of Ophelia and all others present for the meet.

The President made his introductory speech on the lives of both the artistes. He expressed his regrets for delay in holding this meet due to pre-occupation of TAG with its various important events which came in its way. Late Ophelia’s brother Tony Cabral said Ophelia has been his backbone, a mentor, a guide and everything, a mother in true sense as after his father’s death at an early age, the mantle of supporting the whole family fell on the shoulders of Ophelia, who gave him good education and instilled in him the true values of life. He said that he will never forget her till his death as whatever he is today, it is because of Ophelia.

General Council Member of TAG Jessie Dias reminisced that whenever any co-artiste used to face difficulty, Ophelia always used to give them moral support. Senior tiatristCyriaco Dias who played many roles with Ophelia said till today there is no replacement for Ophelia on the Konkani stage. He requested the TAG to initiate something to keep the memory of such artistes alive.

Executive Council Member of TAG Mario Menezes said Ophelia’s acting was so intense that her only one word “baba” used to bring tears in the eyes of the audience. She always used to say that the stage is our second mother and we should always respect it. PremanandLotlikar, President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi and TAG’s Executive Council Member said Ophelia has carved a niche in the hearts of Konkani lovers and will always be remembered.

Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas recollected a devotional song ‘Noman Marie’ for which late Oslando had specially composed music for him to sing at a concert at Saligao on the occasion of Centenary Celebrations of Mae De Deus Church, Saligao in the year 1973. Although, Oslando was based in Bombay throughout his life, he had specially come down to Goa on this occasion by bringing famous Saligao born musicians from Bombay and also in combination with musicians of Saligao who were based in Goa, he formed a special orchestra of the musicians for the occasion. On the first day, he conducted a choir and on the next day he presented a grand musical show for the Saligaonkars.

Wilson Mazarello, a noted tiatr artistesaidthat the new talent of women actors from various places always dreamt of being like Ophelia. He said thathe even remembersthe girls in Goa used to make a beeline to get a glimpse of Ophelia and other Bombay artistes for their trendy new fashioned dresses when they used to come to Goa. He further said that most of these female Goan artistes from Bombay are products of late C. Alvares and whoever be it a girl or boy, trained under C. Alvares have never failed. While acting, Ophelia used to put her whole self in that role. He pointed out that even late Antonette de Calangute who used to do good tragic roles always used to say that she has learnt a lot by watching Ophelia. Speaking on Oslando he said he remembers when this highly talented musician entered the market with his first cassette album ‘PoiloPaus’ which had taken the Konkani Musicloversby storm. His contribution towards Goan folklore is noteworthy.

C. D’Silva, a senior tiatrist and General Council Member of TAG saidthat he has seen many lady artistes but no one can be compared to Ophelia. She had a sweet voice and was a very understanding personality. Arlindo de Miranda said although Ophelia was known for her tragedy roles, if given a comic role she used to perform it with equal ease. He recollected her comic role with late M. Boyer in the tiatr ‘XezariKombo’. God had given her a natural voice to sing different types of particular songs. Remembering Oslando, he said that by introducing ‘Tabla’ in his orchestras, Oslando brought more taste to music. He was a complete musician.

The President of TAG presented the portraits of Ophelia to her brother Tony Cabral and that of Oslando was handed over to Mr. Fredrick Noronha, a neighbor and a family friend of Oslando from Saligao.
