Luis Saturnino Cota a Dedicated Musician

Hailing from Goa’s topmost family of musicians the Cota family, Luis Saturnino Cota popularly known as Luis Cota on the tiatr stage and the Goan music circles is a multi talented musician who has dedicatedly spent his whole life for music. Besides Luis, Fr. Bernardo Cota, Filomeno Cota and Bruno Cota are his other siblings who are also musicians of repute.
Luis was born on 29th November 1938 in the picturesque village of Santa Cruz, Goa to Jose Santana Cota and Piedade Silva.

Luis was the artiste of the month at Tiatr academys monthly programme ‘Meet The Artiste’ held on 19th November,2012 at TAG’s Conference Hall.While narrating his life history Luis Said that he started his musical career at a tender age of 15 years when he joined the then Academia de Musica (now Kala Academy) playing violin for concerts in the year 1953 under the able leadership of Goa’s topmost maestros like Antonio Figueiredo, maestro Fr. Lourdinho Baretto, maestro Fr. Camil Xavier and Fr. Martin Noronha. He has also been a visiting lecturer in violin/solfejo at Kala Academia de Musica for a short time.

Speaking further he said that In the year 1958 he explored the idea of going for other instruments than violin and it was when his father late Jose Santano Cota also a musician of high repute and State Awardee  gifted him a saxophone and thus set a strong music foundation in his musical career. In the year 1959 Luis Cota began playing saxophone for recording at Emissora de Goa (now All India Radio) and also provided music on clarinets, violin, organ, etc for motets. He has also served the “Banda Portuguesa” before liberation and continued to be in the band after liberation and took voluntary retirement in 1983 from his services. Since then there was no looking back for this dedicated gentleman in his musical career.

He has also composed music and participated as a music leader at the first Mando Festival organized by late Bernardo Fernandes, father of Shri. Remo Fernandes and won prizes, since then he has participated at several mando festivals. He had the privilege and honour to play during the Papal Mass in the year 1986 during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Goa. In the year 1993 he started composing and writing music and also playing saxophone at the Goa Doordarshan for Konkani songs.

Till date he has composed and written music to various tiatrs of well-known and popular directors like Tomazinho Cardozo, late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa, Tony Dias, Comedian Agostinho, Comedian Domnic, Comedian Ambe, Samuel Carvalho, Danny de Ribandar, Domnic Fernandes, Michael de Siolim, Salvador de Azossim and recently Dy S.P. Sammy Tavares etc. Besides providing music for tiatrs he has also composed music for many Konkani musical shows performed by, Lorna, Mil-Mel-Nel, Bab Andrew, Aniceto Lourenco, Socorro de Santa Cruz, etc. Besides this he has also composed and written music for numerous Konkani audio albums. He has also played for several village feasts and funerals.

As music runs in the veins of the Cota family, his son Nolvert Cota has got these genes and is a well-known trumpet player who will carry forward the legacy of his father and the Cota family a fact Luis is proud of he said.
