Shahu Narrates his Life Experiences

Shri. Prince Jacob, President of TAG presenting a memento to Shahu

Goa's top-notch musician Francisco Almeida popularly known as Shahu unfolded his life history during the monthly programme ‘Kolakorak Bhett’ – ‘Meet the Artiste’ organized by Tiatr Academy Goa on 22nd August 2012 at 4:45 pm at Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. Narrating his life history, tears rolled down his eyes when he disclosed that it was the dream of his late parents that he should be a musician and play for tiatrs. He said that he is very proud of his parents and it was only due to their encouragement that he became a successful musician.

The programme began with Dr.Francisco Colaco, eminent cardiologist and art lover from Margao rendering a special Konkani song which was well applauded by the audience. Tiatr artistes namely Sylvester Vaz and Polly de Curtorim also sang Konkani songs on this occasion while Shahu provided the music with his keyboards.

Shahu is a skilled musician and he plays various musical instruments like the Drums, Guitar, Saxophone and Keyboards. He told the audience that he first learnt to play the drums under the guidance of musician Errol Perry, son of Goa’s Great Musical Legend Chris Perry. Music became his first love and he was so captivated by the power of music that gradually as the years passed he learnt to play the guitar, saxophone and keyboards on his own abilities.  It was Shahu’s evolution into a keyboardist that shot him into instant fame. Interestingly, Shahu switched over to the keyboards not on his own will but at the suggestion of Fr. Livio D'Mello under whose guidance he played for the choir at St. Francis Xavier's church, Macasana. From then on there was no looking back for Shahu and his musical journey continued successfully.Evolving into an ace drummer, Shahu played the drums for many well-known Goan bands of the nineties such as 'Ultimate', 'Magic Touch', 'The News', 'Human Status', 'Black Lace', etc. Shahu after playing music for quite a lot of tiatrs in Goa proceeded to Kuwait to make a living. Shahu has performed for veteran tiatr directors such as Rosario Rodrigues, Prem Kumar, Roseferns, Philip Almeida, Milagres de Chandor, Menino Mario, Mariano Fernandes, Menino de Bandar, Pascoal Rodrigues, Anil Pednekar, C.D. Silva, John D' Silva, Ben Evangelisto etc, apart from all the directors in Kuwait.

Shahu disclosed that he is the first Goan musician to play a one-man band in dramas in Kuwait. He said that since there is great difficulty in getting musicians playing blowing instruments in Kuwait, Jose Rod in his Non-Stop Konkani Drama ‘Tujem Nanv Vhodd Zanv’ had requested Shahu to compose, pre-record and play the music for his full drama on a Synthesizer instead of being played by a live band. It was here when Shahu single handedly and efficiently played the one-man band.

Answering a question, Shahu stated that blowing instrument is the core of tiatr music and it should never die. The music from blowing instruments is very soothing and pleasing to the ears, he concluded.

The President of TAG, Shri.Prince Jacob presented a bouquet and memento to Shahu as a memory of being the artiste of the month in the programme ‘Kolakorak Bhett’. Earlier Shri. Prince Jacob welcomed the gathering while Shri.Victor de Sa, Member Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Joy Fernandes, Cultural Organizer.
