Anita Pereira sharing her experiences with the audience

A very famed tiatr artiste of yester years Aninha Maria Pereira popularly known as Anita Pereira or Anita de Goa was the artiste of the month in TAGs monthly programme ‘Kolakorak Bhett’ ‘Meet the Artiste’ held on Thursday, 29th March 2012 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao Goa.

Born on 9th August 1944 and hailing from Chinchinim, Anita shared her experiences on how difficult it was for her to come on the tiatr stage. Though she had excellent singing abilities since her childhood, she never got the encouragement from her parents till one day her father’s close friend noticed her singing and acting abilities and requested her father to allow her to participate in tiatrs. She stated that at that time a woman acting on tiatr stage was not taken in a good taste and it was due to this reason her parents never encouraged her to act in tiatrs.

She was only 14 years old when she first stepped on the stage in the tiatr ‘Tarvotteachem Sukh’ written and directed by Saluzin D’Costa. “I rendered beautifully a solo and a duet. My singing kept the audience spell bound and was very much appreciated by all. It is at this time that my father acknowledged my talent and started promoting me on the tiatr stage” expressed Anita.

Anita also praised Jephis Hitler another popular director of that time and a family friend who not only offered her roles in his tiatrs but also showed fatherly concern towards her. Wherever he took her, he made it sure that she was directly under his personal care and supervision. “It was in the tiatr ‘Bakro Amje Zalem’ again by Jephis Hitler which gave me the most successful break of my career as this tiatr went on to become a great hit in Goa as well as in Mumbai. My excellent performance in ‘Bakro Amje Zalem’ at Bhangwadi Mumbai not only captured the hearts of the audience but impressed many popular tiatr directors who spotted me”. She further stated that it was at this time she got the title ‘Anita de Goa’ and from this day onwards there was no looking back for her.

Offers started pouring in from Mumbai as well as Goa. Stalwarts of Konkani stage such as late J.P. Souzalin, late Aristides Dias, Jacint Vaz, Prem Kumar, Alfred Rose, Robin Vaz, John Claro approached her and offered her roles in their tiatrs. Besides these, Anita has also acted with almost all the well known Tiatr/Khell-Tiatr directors namely Antonio Moraes, Patrick Dourado, Wilmix, Fely-Lucas, etc.

The programme was well attended. Amongst the audience present were noted tiatrists namely John Claro, Anil Kumar, Rico Rod, C. D’Silva, Platilda Dias, Sharon Mazarello, Luis Bachan, Clara Dias, etc. While speaking, John Claro stated that Anita could act in any role that was given to her but her best performance that he recalled was of a ‘kunnbi’ woman. Relating to her performance in his ‘Purtuguez Kolvont’ John Claro praised her acting and singing abilities and mentioned that she had a wide range in her singing.

During interaction with Anita another noted tiatr artiste, Shri. Anil Kumar tried to recall her forgotten memories of the tiatr stage. In reply to his questions, Anita mentioned that John Claro was one of her favorite directors. Replying to John Claro’s question whether she would act if he thinks to restage ‘Purtuguez Kolvont’ Anita replied positively. This was applauded by the audience. Amongst her favourite music directors she mentioned names of noted musicians of yester years namely Alex Mestri, Fidelis, Philip de Sanvordem, etc.

Earlier Shri. Victor de Sa, Member Secretary of TAG welcomed the artiste as well as the audience. One minute silence was also observed in memory of late Remmie Colaco. Mr. de Sa also presented a memento on behalf of Tiatr Academy to Anita as a remembrance of the occasion. Shri. Joy Fernandes Cultural Organizer of TAG compered the function and proposed a vote of thanks.
