Mariano Leopoldo Almeida recounts his stage memories

“I never got an opportunity to act in school plays except singing opening chorus” narrated Mariano Leopoldo Almeida who was the artiste of the month at TAG’s monthly programme ‘Meet the Artiste’ held on 29th April 2015 at the Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

“I had great liking for tiatr since my childhood. I used to be after my mother to take me to watch tiatrs in my village. I used to feel that I can survive without food but not without tiatrs” he reminisced. He recounted how he used to run to collect the handbills behind the vehicles making propaganda for the tiatr shows in the village.  He also used to do the collection of the lyrics of kantaram of tiatr stalwarts and preserve them.

He was first introduced on the professional tiatr stage by well-known writer and poet, Shri Jess Fernandes and later he joined Ligorio Fernandes’ troupe with whom he is serving till today. He has also acted in tiatrs of other directors like Premanand Sangodkar, A.M.Pacheco and Mike Mehta.

He said, in between he had a fall and had to stop acting in tiatrs. After recovering he re-joined Ligorio’s troupe and participated in Lenten tiatrs.

He won first prize for best acting in the recently organised Lenten Tiatr Competition by Times Group.

During the interaction, while replying to a query by one of his fan about how he prepares for his role, he said that he keeps on reading the full script thoroughly until the last performance of the tiatr. To this Prince Jacob who has acted with him many a times, quipped in by appreciating Mariano for his discipline and punctuality.

Earlier Shri Jacob Fernandes, President of TAG welcomed the artiste and audience and later presented a memento to Mariano. Shri Jose Alexandre Rodrigues, Member Secretary of TAG proposed a vote of thanks. Shri Jess Luz, Programme In-charge compered.
Prominent among those present were tiatr artistes Wilson Mazarello, C. D’Silva, Agnelo de Borim, etc. besides Pio Esteves, Jose Maria D’Silva, etc.
