A well known Konkani song composer and tiatr artiste, Edwin D’Costa was invited by TAG at its monthly programme ‘Meet the Artiste’ held on 20th February 2015 at the Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan-Margao.

While narrating the journey of his career as a composer, Edwin explained “Most of the artistes in the beginning of their lives write poems, but amazingly I wrote a tiatr first and performed it with the help of neighbouring boys at the age of 12. Later on, I wrote a poem and gave it to Fr. Planton Faria, who published it on ‘Gõychim Kirnnam’. I was very much astonished to see it on this publication along with my name. It was a happiest moment for me.” He gradually started writing poetry and write-ups for various local Konkani publications. In the year 1979, he published his first book of poetry entitled ‘Vattsur’ and later in the year 1980 he released a Konkani audio album ‘Goencho Avaz’ which became an instant hit.

Edwin expressed his gratitude of how people helped him in his endeavours.

He said that his mother and his brother late Simon always stood by him and because of their support and encouragement; he could produce 81 music albums so far. He also rendered a song dedicated to his mother who was present for the meet, which made the audience emotional.

Franky Fernandes one of his fan from Paroda questioned him how he managed to compose around 10,000 songs. On replying to his query Edwin said that one day he himself put on to test and surprisingly he could manage to pen 50 songs in a day. He further added that writing solos is easier than composing trios. Jessie Dias, a veteran tiatr artiste recollected how Edwin composed a song on a given tune on the spot for recording.

This gifted artiste also revealed his hidden talent of making earthen cribs during his youthful days. Edwin is also a good electronic technician said Andrew D’Cunha, his instructor while working at Goa Shipyard, who was present on the occasion.

Earlier Shri Jacob Fernandes, President of TAG welcomed the artiste and audience and later presented a memento to Edwin as a remembrance of the day. Shri Jose Alexandre Rodrigues, Member Secretary of TAG proposed a vote of thanks. Shri Jess Luz, Programme In-charge compered.

Prominent among those present were tiatr personalities Xavier Gomes, Marcus Vaz, C. D’Silva, Wilson Mazarello, Bonny Pereira, Jr. Nelson, Eddie Mascarenhas, Peter V. Fernandes, Seby Mascarenhas, Michael Gracias, etc.
