Peter Camilo enthrals the audience

Joe Rose, Vice President of TAG presenting a memento to Peter Camilo in the presence of Member Secretary Jose Alexandre Rodrigues

A well known tiatr artiste and song writer, Peter Camilo was the artiste of the month at TAG’s monthly programme ‘Meet the Artiste’ held on 19th January 2015 at the Conference Hall of Tiatr Academy of Goa, Campal, Panaji.

The programme began with the clipping of a song by Peter Camilo. While interacting with his fans, he said “I had love for tiatr from my childhood. My uncle Cruz Camilo used to write tiatr every year on the occasion of our church feast of Our Lady of Penha de France and I used to stay awake during the nights and watch their rehearsals. This inspired me and I started writing my own tiatrs”.

He expressed his gratitude towards late C. Alvares for introducing him on professional stage. He recollected a song on lent sung by him in C. Alvares’s tiatr where he dressed as an old lady which got a good response from the audience and soon he started getting offers from other directors to sing in their tiatrs.

He lamented that he couldn’t continue on the professional stage for long time as he had to leave Goa for Gulf for better prospects.

But his love for Goa and Konkani tiatr made him to visit Goa every year during village feast and participate in tiatr. He said that he always composes the opening song on Our Lady before composing other songs.  He also rendered some of his songs and thanked the Almighty for gifting him with the talent of composing songs. Quartet of ‘Camilo Sisters’ comprising of his 2 daughters Lenzie & Shirley and 2 nieces also sang some songs composed by Peter Camilo.

One of his fans Shirish Naik, a well known Tiatr director appreciated his contribution towards tiatrs and promoting the local young talents from Britona. His uncle T. Briton, a renowned singer and tiatr artiste revealed that most of the comedy songs which he sings are composed by Peter, which gained him popularity and brought him on the top of the chart.

On answering the query of another fan Epifanio Valadares about the perfection in his lyrics, Peter said that he always refines the songs after composing. He further said that if there is no moral for the song then it becomes meaningless. Fr. Kyriel D’Souza, former Parish Priest of Penha de France Church, Britona who specially made his presence felt, said that although Peter looks serious, his comedy songs are amazing and praised him for his decency in lyrics.

Shri Joe Rose, Vice President of TAG welcomed the artiste and audience and also presented a memento to Peter Camilo.  Member Secretary Shri Jose Alexandre Rodrigues proposed a vote of thanks. Shri Jess Luz, Programme In-charge compered.
