Cajetan de Sanvordem at TAG’s Meet the Artiste

Jacob Fernandes, President of TAG presenting a memento to Cajetan de Sanvordem in the presence of Member Secretary Jose Alexandre Rodrigues

He spent most of his life in the City of Kuwait but did not forget his mother tongue and his culture.

Cajetan de Sanvordem as he is popularly known on the tiatr stage was invited by the Tiatr Academy of Goa at their regular monthly programme ‘Meet the Artiste’ held on August 2014 at the Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

While narrating his stage life, Cajetan remembered his childhood days wherein he would be by the side of his maternal grandfather Francis Figueiredo from Caranzalem who used to stage folk plays during carnival time from where he got the inspiration to act. Cajetan also remembered the fond memories wherein he and his compatriot and neighbour Anthony San put up an amateur tiatr complete with improvised stage at the age of 17. After performing for well-known directors particularly his fellow villager the great Remmie Colaco in those days, Cajetan also staged two of his own dramas ‘Bhattkarachem Kortub’ and ‘Africar’. Although he was getting lot of opportunities, in 1976 Cajetan has to leave for Kuwait in search of greener pastures. Very soon Cajetan took up acting in various dramas put up by Goans in the Kuwait City and gained popularity for his excellent acting.

He formed the famed Kuwait Trio along with Marcus Vaz and Xavier Gomes and was replaced by Mario de Majorda and Michael D’Silva when Xavier and Marcus left for Goa. As a versatile actor and singer, Cajetan has performed across the Gulf and UK and also in Goa whenever he got the opportunity.

An ardent lover of Konkani, Cajetan is proud of his both children Clemie and Cliffod who both are lovers of Konkani culture. Cajetan complimented the present day directors who with their innovative style have taken the Konkani stage to greater heights. He also said that the quality of singing and music has also improved a lot. Speaking further he said that he plans to stage his own drama with a mega star cast and also produce a full length Konkani film which will be partly shot in Kuwait and in Goa.

Prominent among those present were veteran tiatr artistes Jess Fernandes, Wilson Mazarello, Anthony San, Justiniano Fernandes, Angela Moraes, Ben Evangelisto, William Fernandes, Sylvester Vaz, Marcus Vaz, Cruz de Sanvordem, etc

Earlier Shri Jacob Fernandes, President of TAG welcomed the gathering and also presented a memento to Cajetan de Sanvordem as a remembrance of the day.
