Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) organized its monthly programme ‘Somplolea Tiatristancho Ugddas’ – Remembering Tiatr Artistes of Yester Years on 11th April 2012 at the Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao to remember veteran artistes of tiatr stage namely Jacinto Vaz, A. S. Conception,  Nelson Afonso, Thomas Coogan, Champion Alvares, William de Curtorim and Fidelis Fernandes.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, former President of TAG who was the main speaker, highlighted the valuable contribution of these great artistes to the tiatr stage in the yester years. Mr. Cardozo said that Jacint Vaz was the most popular comedian of tiatr stage who went on to acclaim the title of Charlie Chaplain of the Konkani stage. His body movement was such that it was enough to set the audience into laughter even without uttering a single word.

Speaking further Mr. Cardozo said that Conception and Nelson Afonso once upon a time were a part of famous trio (Anthony-Conception-Nelson) who dominated the tiatr stage at that time and delivered to the tiatr audience without any fear their beautiful and powerful songs which had a special message in it and well appreciated by the audience. After the death of Nelson late Souza Boy joined this trio and kept up to the fame that they had acclaimed. Interestingly Souza Boy was also born in the month of April. This was brought to the notice of TAG on the very same day of the function. 

Mr. Cardozo also highlighted the works of late Souza Boy who was a composer of a very high class and also acted as a comedian. He also said that Nelson Afonso created history by introducing the ‘Revolving Stage’ in his much acclaimed tiatr ‘Dolorosa’.

Speaking further Mr. Cardozo said that Champion Alvares was a good script writer, director, lyricist, singer and a fine actor and was particularly known for composing and singing folk-songs which truly enriched Goan culture. Fidelis Fernandes was a well-known musician of the Konkani tiatr stage. He was a trumpet player and contributed immensely to the development of Konkani Song and Music by playing excellent music in several tiatrs.

William de Curtorim was a popular writer, director, lyricist, and singer. He was known by people as ‘Jet Speed Singer’. He was a bold and fearless singer who exposed hypocrisy, corruption and nepotism through his political songs, due to which he was extremely popular among the masses. Thomas Coogan was one of the best actors and singers of tiatr. He was also a good playwright. His speciality was that he enacted Hindu roles with great perfection and ease. 

Prominent artistes who spoke on the occasion were Anil Kumar, C. D’Silva and Osvy Viegas. They narrated various incidents that they were part of and experience with these great artistes. Osvy and C. D’Silva congratulated Tiatr Academy for organizing such programmes and showcasing the works and sacrifices of the tiatr artistes of yester years who have rendered yeomen service to the tiatr stage. Socorro de Santa Cruz rendered two songs of late Jacint Vaz and later joined Tony King Alvares, Theo Alvares and Irene Seixas children of Champion Alvares who sang a beautiful folk song of their late father.

Other family members of some of the late artiste who attended are Jessica and Tanya Vaz grand-daughters of late Jacint Vaz, Jessei Menezes and Meera wife and daughter of late William de Curtorim, Thereza wife and Graciana sister of late Fidelis Fernandes.  

Earlier Shri. Victor de Sa, Member Secretary of TAG welcomed the audience. Shri. Joy Fernandes, Cultural Organizer of TAG proposed a vote of thanks and compered the function.
