Somplolea Tiatristancho Ugdass/ Remembering Tiatr Artistes of Yester Years

Tiatr Academy Goa organized a special programme on 15th July 2011 at TAG’s Conference Hall to remember the tiatr artistes who are no more living and who have contributed a lot for the development of tiatr in the past. The function was dedicated to the artistes who were born in the month of July. These artistes are A.M.B. Rose, Alexinho de Candolim, Domnick Vaz and Carmo Rod.

Speaking on the occasion Shri. Anil Kumar informed the gathering about the works and contribution of Domnick Vaz and Carmo Rod to the tiatr stage particularly to Konkani songs – kantaram. Both were good singers as well as good composers of songs and that they made use of their songs to give tiatr audience different messages of life including against the merger of Goa into Maharashtra during the Opinion Poll in 1967.

Jessie Dias a veteran tiatr artiste showcased the contribution of A.M.B. Rose and Alexinho de Candolim for the development of tiatr. She described A.M.B Rose as one of the greatest character artistes of the tiatr stage and paid tributes to Alexinho de Candolim as one of the most popular writer, director, actor and singer of his times.

Tiatr lovers who were gathered also shared their experiences with the artistes of yester years. John Claro narrated an incident in the life of Carmo Rod. While Lawrence Fernandes remembered experiences with Alexinho de Candolim.

Besides Socorro de Santa Cruz, Sharon Mazarello, Filipe Fernandes and Joaquim Rodrigues, brother of Carmo Rod rendered songs sung by the old artistes.

Earlier Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG in his welcome speech highlighted the importance of remembering tiatr artistes of yester years because such activities will keep alive the memories of the old artistes fresh in the minds of modern generation.

The family members of the veteran artistes were presented with a memento by TAG as a mark of their gratitude to the artistes of yester years.

Shri. Victor de Sa, Member Secretary of TAG proposed a vote of thanks. Shri. Joy Fernandes, Programme Officer of TAG compared the function.
